The fair case
What A Self-Storage Unit genuinely does better
Self-storage is cheap, available immediately, and you can access it whenever you like without booking. For volume — furniture, general office clutter, the contents of a cleared room — it is the right product and nothing here competes with it. If what you need is space, that is what to rent.
The limit
Where the gap is
It stops being appropriate the moment the boxes hold regulated or client data. A unit is a rented room with a padlock you supply: no intake record, no inventory, no access log, and no chain of custody, so you cannot demonstrate who reached the material or when. It is not climate-controlled in the sense magnetic media needs, even where it is air-conditioned. Most agreements limit liability to a token amount, and unpaid rent leads to a lien sale — a lawful process that transfers your boxes to a stranger. For data an organization is answerable for, that combination is very hard to defend afterwards.
Our view
The honest verdict
A storage unit is cheaper and that is the only column it wins. For regulated data it is not merely worse — the absence of climate control and chain of custody is itself the audit finding. If the data were not worth protecting you would not be keeping it.
